- Minutes from June 21st,
2008 Meeting.
The Club
Meeting
The June meeting
took place on Saturday, June 21st the same date as the Marietta IPMS Phantom Show, at 10 AM EST at Triplee AAA Hobbies in
Marietta, GA. A number of
members were not present due to attending the IPMS event,
Chairman Pete Garrison had made the trip across the central USA for the Tulsa Show, while a few other members were on vacation. Triple AAA Hobbies however did host 8 of
our number with 2 visitors from "The Tar Heel State", Dan Kournegay and Sturgis Payne. The group made them feel welcomed and even
tried to twist their arm to come back in June, but due to the cost of gas,
that might be a stretch. Nevertheless, President George Christy called the
group of painters and miniature enthusiasts to order at 10 AM EST.
Old Business…
-At 9 AM the Gettysburg Project Group gathered to talk shop
on the display and work on their various figures for the Wright's Brigade
Vignette. The group led by the now retired Fire Captain, Dave Oswalt, continued to show progress on their various
Shenandoah and Military Miniatures Warehouse kits. Remember the group meets every meeting date
at 9 AM at Triple AAA Hobbies. See you all in July! Keep up
the good work! A
side note…The ever prolific painting machine, Ron Wehrman, has already
completed his two figures for the display. That Ron is one painting machine
of notoriety! When does he sleep…?
-The Atlanta Miniature Figure Society has locked up the Smyrna Public Library and will host a display in January
and February 2009 to encourage attendance to the 32nd Annual AMFS Show as
well as encourage new miniature painters to check out the AMFS Group. Thanks
to President, George Christy, for looking into the Smyrna Library and coordinating the display in early 2009.
Show and
Tell…
Jim
Blasco …took the
point and got Show and Tell rolling….Jim brought in a new Stormtroopers
release of a 120mm German SS Machine Gunner from Budapest Campaign, 1942. Jim pointed out several detailed
features of the kit purchased from The Red Lancers. He also shared a review
from Military Modeling, issue 2nd November, 2007 on Matt
Springer's 101st US Paratrooper bust done for Albertaus. A number of folks agreed that Military Modeling
is still one of the best true modeling magazines on the market! Thanks Jim
for sharing…
Dee
Moore…brought in the
Tamiya 80mm German Luftwaffe Pilot. Dee has completed
the figure and done a very nice job! It looks like she is being to ramp up
her painting as she also showed a completed Tamiya
1/35th scale Krupp
truck which was weathered and airbrushed. Dee added some nice touches to the
vehicle by adding a number of items to the truck bed: Mauser rifle, gas cans,
ammo boxes, panzerfaust, and a variety of bedroll/sleeping bag items. Nice
job on the Krupp Dee! You now have become an official member of the armor building
contingent with your second armor related kit! She also brought in an in progress bust
from Forlorn Hope Miniatures of the 2nd Wisconsin, famed member of the Federally renown Iron Brigade.
We look forward to seeing the bust completed in the days to come. It already
looked nice due to Dee's meticulous attention to assembly.
Dave
Oswalt... the
recently retired Fire Captain from Rome, GA shared the newest Osprey Man at
Arms title on the Confederate Army 1861-65 ( 6), Kentucky, Maryland and
Missouri Troops. Dave also showed an interesting book on US Armor by
David Harper, Tank Warfare on Iowa Jima…And last of all, Dave brought
in a book that he read as a young man which inspired him to delve further
into history. The book was Bruce Lancaster's, Ticonderoga, The Story of a Fort. Many a painter
stated that they too were so inspired by a book while in their youth. Thanks Dave
for sharing. We appreciate it and wish you well on your retirement. Don't
build too many tanks or paint too many figures in the days to come!
Matt Springer…the ever improving sculpting talent of Matt Springer was further displayed as he not one, but two busts to share…Matt had taken the in progress bust from the last meeting of a basic head
and turned it into a General from the Punic Wars between Carthage and Rome.
Your humble minute taker cannot describe the completed bust due to his lack
of knowledge on the period. But one observation is the bust looked like a
small caricature from a museum. Yes, folks it was that good! We will let Matt share with everyone more news on the completed bust in the days to
come. The other in progress bust, Matt stated is earmarked to be the character played by Orlando Bloom from the movie, Kingdom of Heaven. Folks, Matt continues to get better with each new creation. And he is
also getting faster as well. We all applaud his efforts and look forward to next
month's completed creation.
Sturgis Payne…
brought in an in progress 90mm Pegaso Crusader Knight of the 12th Century.
Sturgis had some questions on using a crock pot to cure his artist oils as he
is striving to get a matte look to his artist oils. The group shared their
many experiences from using a crock pot. An observation to note is Sturgis has really
done a very neat and detailed job on the chain mail and is turning out a very
smooth, crisp looking white on the drapery and garments. We thank Sturgis for
coming out and wish he and Dan many more
opportunities to attend our meetings.
Mark
McGinnis .... recently attended the Joe Atlanta Event and shared a lot
of pictures from the G.I Joe extravaganza. It is amazing how much detail the
Joe fans put into their work. We hope to encourage their membership to attend
our upcoming show in February
Closing out Show
and Tell…Terry Martin brought in his in progress Le Cimier
54mm figure of Colonel Jolly of the Line Lancers, Metal Models 54mm Honor
Guard Officer from Naples, and a conversion of a 54mm Metal Models Chasseur
A Cheval of the Guard Imperial. Terry brought
the figures in last month, but has added scenic backgrounds for each kit from
A&B Putty, Bass Wood and Magic Sculpt. He also shared an in progress S&T bust of a Confederate
Infantryman from the 1st Tennessee Infantry, 1863 which he has painted in artist oils! He asked the group for some tips on doing
the bedroll as a quilt. And he ended show and tell with an assembled Roll
Call 100mm figure of a 95th Rifles Officer from 1815.
