The Atlanta Military Figure Society regularly meets on the third Saturday of each month. The meetings take place at Triple AAA Hobby in Marietta, Georgia.

The monthly meetings begin promptly at 10:00 AM EST and typically last no longer than 2 hours. The meetings feature show-and-tell; news about club events and the modeling community; how-to demonstrations and discussions on modeling techniques; and a sought-after door prize. Afternoons following meetings are available for sessions to work on club and personal modeling projects

- Minutes from August 21st, 2010 Meeting.

The Club Meeting

Fifteen members made the August meeting at Triple AAA Hobbies. This was by far one of the best attended meetings of the summer! There was a panorama of painted and in progress pieces for review, so without further adieu,  President George Christy started up the Show and Tell machine …

David Wiggins…brought in his 1/9th scale bust from Legends Productions of the United States national personification, Uncle Sam. David did a very nice job on this national image. David also shared an article on the Feb 2010 Atlanta Military Figure Society Show in Figure International Magazine, Volume #34. A very nice article on the most recent Atlanta event. Well worth the read!

Terry Martin…had his three 120mm Michael Roberts Napoleonic figures for everyone to review.  Terry had the Michael Roberts French Carabinier from Napoleon's Italian Campaign based and on groundwork. He shared his in progress Michael Roberts Italian Grenadier in Spain which he has staged on a rough roadbed with ruts and potholes. The Michael Roberts French Dragon in Spain was staged with a scratch built well section.   He also showed an in progress Wolf bust of a French Voltigeur which he is painting as a member of the Vistula Legion serving in Spain, 1809. All in all, it appeared that Terry had sold his soul The Emperor! Then he produced a new release from Michael Roberts of a 100mm 13th Pennsylvania Reserves, better known as The Bucktails.

Ron Wehrman…introduced the group to one of the greatest challenges in the hobby-Historex 54mm kits. Ron is a master at assembling, staging and displaying these little gems. They require a great deal of modeling skill as well as patience. And in the hands of an advanced modeler can be assembled, worked, and converted to just about anything! Ron had 2 completed mounted figures: a French Carabinier Officer and an Austrian Uhlan from the Napoleonice Era. He also had two in progress Mounted (French) Scouts of The Imperial Guard (Eclaireurs a Cheval). Napoleon created four regiments of scouts' lancers in 1813 to combat the pesky Cossacks. Napoleon envied the Russian cavalry's use of the mounted scouts which did everything from light reconnaissance, creating havoc behind enemy lines, and executing hit and run tactics that were almost unstoppable.  These Mounted Scouts were attached to the Cavalry of the Guard, Horse Grenadiers , Dragoons and Light Horse where they became one of the most active arms of the Cavalry, always at the fore front of the most punishing and dangerous situations. We look forward to seeing Ron bring these little plastic gems to life in the days to come. Now you know why Ron is nicknamed, Atlanta's Mr. Historex!

David Oswalt…Our Rome resident brought in a clever conversion. David took the old I& E bust of the Iron Brigade of the West and repainted it as a member of the 3rd Georgia Volunteer Infantry, Co. F- The Wilkinson Rifles.   I for one really enjoy seeing the early war uniforms worn by the CSA troops and this bust was nothing short of colorful.  David also had the Carl Reid sculpted bust of the WWI Aviator from Model Cellar. David noted that he really enjoyed painting this kit and it showed. He did mention that his casting had some odd eyes and he had to add some putty and rework them. And finally, David introduced his line of resin cast bases which are suitable for 54mm figures. David noted that they are available at $5.00 and $7.00 per base and to contact him for more details. Dee Moore noted that she especially envisions them as being very popular to the fantasy painters due to their colorfulness.

Dee Moore…followed with another Model Cellar cast bust of Queen Victoria's Rifles, early 1914 WWI era. She noted that she was looking forward to getting some paint on something soon as she has been prohibited by work and travel and health issues lately. So look out Dee is due to be painting like a madman, ah madwomen soon! She also noted that she has some new note cards from the Artist Preservation Group, featuring the latest artwork from Gary Dombrowski of the Pennsylvania Bucktails.

Allen Priest…shared his first fully painted figure with our group. Allen brought in a 120mm Verlinden 8th Air Force Pilot , WWII. Allen said he was greatly motivated to do the figure due to his recent study of aircraft and the USA's forces in WWII. Nice job Allen! He also had the Pegaso 54mm fantasy figure of Nokjagerin. Allen is painting the piece in acrylics and following Matt Springer's instruction which is being done through the painting session prior to the monthly club meeting!   This is Allen's first attempt at acrylics. For his first attempt, the facial features were very good! We look forward to seeing his continued progress in the days to come.

Jim Blasco…brought back his Jeff Shiu WWII Germans which he shared with the group at the July Meeting. The folks who were away at the APG Show in Gettysburg were glad Jim brought back the Jeff Shiu figures of the German Machine Gun Team and the Fallschirmjager. . Jim also showed an Aerosan 1/35th scale kit from Kirin that he purchased back in the mid 90's …Jim had the Alpine 1/35th scale figure of Kurt "Panzer" Meyer and an old figure 54mm figure from Drummer Boy Miniatures of a U. S. Sharpshooter. Former club member,  Kevin Golden, who now lives in Arizona, did the figure for Drummer Boy back in the mid to late 90's.

Pete Garrison…brought back his Poste Militaire 80mm Hidatsu Dog Soldier figure. Pete is meticulously painting the figure and noted the detail on the figure's clothing. In fact, he went so far as to purchase some porcupine quills from an online seller to get an idea of the detail of work done by Native Americans on their clothing and accoutrements. Now, how is that for researching a topic!

Gary Heedick… was back and shared his in progress work on the Tamiya  Adolph Galland figure which he is working on currently. Gary shared with the group some details on Galland's quirkiness as he had a drawing of American Cartoon Character-Mickey Mouse painted on his plane during WWII. Gary showed his in progress painting of Galland's head which he is doing in acrylics.  We look forward to seeing Adolph come to life!

Jody Hundig….brought back the hero of Sherwood Forest, Robin Hood. She has since built a unique stage with trees /forest like backdrop for the basing of Andrea's 54mm Robin Hood. Jody is really getting into this figure folks! I personally look forward to seeing the final results. She also had her 120mm Verlinden Viking Viking  which she is staging in an in progress Church. And last of all, Jody had painted the 1/10th scale El Viego bust of Marcus Aurelius, from the movie, Gladiator.  Keep your eyes on Jody, she is really making some progress in her work.

Benjamin Christy…shared a book he recently purchased, Weapons, Arms and Armor throughout History. Benjamin is researching weapons to get an idea for a future figure project.

Mark McGinnis…brought in a Warriors bust he recently purchased from Chris Fontenot, of a WWII GI wearing a fatigue cap. Mark noted the face was very reminiscent of a young solider and looked a lot like our own Joe Singletary! And Mark brought in free hemp rope for the taking. Yep, leave it up to a former law enforcement member to bring in hemp for our group! Seriously, the binder twine, as it is called by farmers, is excellent for creating realistic looking grass on bases of groundwork. See Mark for the hemp as he has quite a bit of it!

George Christy closed out Show and Tell by sharing a recent purchase off E-Bay of an Andrea 54mm Lillie of the Lamplight. And he also showed an old 1/35th scale casting from Warriors of a WWII Russian Infantryman and US GI. The figures are staged embracing as they have just gotten word that WWII had ended in Europe.

The group then moved on to the Meeting's "Club Business"…
